The Boeing E-3 Sentry, also known as AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System), is a high-wing aircraft designed for reconnaissance, detection and airspace control. The aircraft uses a rotating antenna located on top of the wing, allowing it to survey a large area including air traffic, ground targets, and aerial threats. The E-3 Sentry is based on the Boeing 707 civil transport aircraft and was first deployed during the 1991 Gulf War. It is in service with many countries including the United States, France, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom. The aircraft is equipped with sophisticated electronic equipment, including the AN/APY-2 radar, which can detect targets at ranges up to 400 km, and a data transmission system that allows coordination with other aircraft and ground forces.
