BAC 111
The BAC 111 (short for British Aircraft Corporation One-Eleven) was a short-range jet transport aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) in the 1960s. The aircraft was designed as a successor to narrower and smaller aircraft such as the Vickers Viscount and de Havilland Comet. The BAC 111 was equipped with two Rolls-Royce Spey jet engines and was capable of carrying up to 119 passengers over a distance of 1,600 km (1,600 mi). The aircraft was popular with several airlines around the world due to its speed, economy and ability to operate from smaller airports. During its service, the BAC 111 was upgraded and modernized several times. In 1979, a version with an extended fuselage and longer range, called the One-Eleven 500, was even introduced. With the advent of more modern and efficient aircraft such as the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320, the BAC 111 gradually became obsolete and by the 1990s was mostly replaced by more modern types.
