Concorde
The Concorde was a supersonic civil transport aircraft developed by the British Aircraft Corporation and Aérospatiale in the 1960s. The aircraft could reach speeds of up to Mach 2.04 (about 2,180 km/h) and was capable of crossing the Atlantic Ocean in less than 3.5 hours. The Concorde was one of the fastest and most powerful aircraft in the history of civil aviation. The first flight of Concorde took place in 1969 and the aircraft was put into commercial service in 1976 by Air France and British Airways. A total of 20 Concorde aircraft were built, the last of which was produced in 1978. Most of the Concorde flights were between Europe and North America, with very high ticket prices for a more affluent clientele. The Concorde was distinguished not only by its speed, but also by its luxurious interior and quality service. The aircraft had a capacity of up to 100 passengers and was equipped with modern avionics and other technological gadgets. The Concorde was also controversial due to its high noise and emissions pollution, which led to restrictions on its operation and eventually its closure in 2003. Other factors that led to the discontinuation of Concorde included the financial losses of the operators and the tragic accident in 2000 when an Air France Concorde crashed after take-off from Paris airport, claiming 113 lives. Concorde remains to this day a symbol of innovation in aviation and an expression of technological progress in civil aviation.
