The Convair CV-990 was a transport aircraft developed by Convair in the 1950s. This wide-body aircraft was designed for commercial air transport and offered significantly higher speed and range than other aircraft of its time. It was powered by four General Electric CJ805-23 twin-jet engines and could carry up to 96 passengers in two classes. Despite having some developmental problems and being maintenance intensive, the CV-990 was operated by several airlines, including Swissair, American Airlines and Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS). However, it was eventually replaced by more modern models, and most examples were retired in the late 1970s.
