Fairey Gannet
The Fairey Gannet was a British airborne patrol aircraft that was designed and manufactured by the Fairey Aviation Company in the 1950s. It was intended for research, reconnaissance and anti-submarine warfare and was the first British aircraft to be equipped with a turboprop engine. The Gannet had two wings, a high tailplane and a twin tail section. It was armed with two 7.62 mm machine guns and could carry torpedoes, depth charges, rockets and bombs. The Gannet's unique feature was its vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capability, which meant it could hover above an aircraft carrier without the need for a catapult or grappling hook. This was achieved by a "mast" engine, which was located at the rear of the aircraft and rotated 90 degrees to produce downward thrust. This feature was useful for operations in confined spaces, such as an aircraft carrier, where there was not enough space for long runways. The Gannet was used by the navies of several countries, including Britain, Australia, Indonesia and Germany. A total of 345 Fairey Gannets were built and the aircraft remained in service until the 1970s.
