The Heinkel He 219 UHU (German for "owl") was a German night fighter aircraft developed during World War II. The aircraft was designed to combat Allied bomber aircraft and featured a number of technical innovations and improvements. The He 219 was twin-engined and armed with 30 mm and 20 mm calibre guns and 13 mm calibre machine guns. It also had advanced radar equipment FuG 220 Lichtenstein SN-2 and could be equipped with R4M rockets, which were air-to-air missiles. The aircraft was fast, maneuverable and effective in night combat conditions. It was capable of inflicting considerable damage on Allied bombers, becoming one of the Luftwaffe's most dangerous night fighter aircraft. The He 219 entered service in 1942, but production was delayed due to engine and technical problems. Only about 300 of the aircraft were produced, but the performance of the He 219 was so high that many aircraft were used until the end of the war. After the war ended, some He 219s were captured by the Allies and used for testing. Several examples of the aircraft are still preserved in museums around the world.
