The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is a military aerial refueling aircraft that first entered service in 1956. It was designed to support and extend the range of U.S. military aircraft by providing them with fuel through a hose system in flight. The KC-135 has been in constant service with the U.S. Air Force since its introduction and has been used in a variety of missions, including strategic transport, reconnaissance and electronic surveillance. The KC-135 has a maximum takeoff weight of 322,500 pounds and is equipped with four jet engines, allowing it to reach speeds of up to 530 knots (975 km/h). The aircraft can carry up to 200,000 pounds of fuel and be operated by a crew of five.
