Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19
The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-19 (NATO code name "Farmer") was a Soviet supersonic fighter aircraft that entered service in 1955 as a successor to the MiG-17. It was the first Soviet fighter aircraft capable of reaching Mach 1 in level flight. The MiG-19 was equipped with a single cannon and various types of missiles. It had a distinctive high aft section that protected the engine and carried the exhaust nozzles, allowing the aircraft to reach supersonic speeds without the need for afterburners. The aircraft was produced in the USSR and also licensed to other countries such as Poland, China and Egypt. It was in active service in many countries around the world and was used in a variety of roles, including air defense, reconnaissance, and ground troop support. The MiG-19 became known for its use during the Cold War and its involvement in several conflicts such as the Vietnam War and the Arab-Israeli wars. However, due to its age and limited technology, it was gradually replaced by more modern fighter aircraft such as the MiG-21.
