The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 is a Soviet and Russian single-seat supersonic fighter aircraft developed in the 1970s. The aircraft was designed to provide air superiority and attacks on ground targets. The MiG-29 is equipped with two afterburner engines that allow it to reach speeds of up to 2,450 km/h (approximately Mach 2.3) and altitudes of up to 18 kilometres (11 mi). The aircraft is also equipped with advanced electronic systems, including a radar that allows it to detect targets at long ranges and with high accuracy. The MiG-29 has been deployed in several conflicts, including the war in Afghanistan and the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict. The aircraft is still in active service with the Russian Air Force and many other countries, including India, Poland, Hungary and others. Work is currently underway to upgrade the MiG-29 to be able to carry modern electronics and weapons systems. The upgraded versions are referred to as the MiG-29M and MiG-29SMT.
