The Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-29 is a Soviet and Russian single-seat supersonic fighter aircraft developed in the 1970s. The aircraft was designed to provide air superiority and attacks on ground targets. The MiG-29 is equipped with two afterburner engines that allow it to reach speeds of up to 2,450 km/h (approximately Mach 2.3) and altitudes of up to 18 kilometres (11 mi). The aircraft is also equipped with advanced electronic systems, including a radar that allows it to detect targets at long ranges and with high accuracy. The MiG-29 has been deployed in several conflicts, including the war in Afghanistan and the 1999 India-Pakistan conflict. The aircraft is still in active service with the Russian Air Force and many other countries, including India, Poland, Hungary and others. Work is currently underway to upgrade the MiG-29 to be able to carry modern electronics and weapons systems. The upgraded versions are referred to as the MiG-29M and MiG-29SMT.

One of the aircraft was also a MiG-29 referred to as the "Slovak Tiger 2002".This aircraft was specially marked for participation in international air shows and carried a striking camouflage pattern with motifs of the Slovak national emblem. On 6 November 2002, the "Slovak Tiger 2002" crashed during a training flight near the Sliač base. The pilot of the aircraft was killed in the crash. The detailed causes of the crash are not publicly known, but it has been reported that it was a technical malfunction that caused the aircraft to crash to the ground. This tragic event is still commemorated at memorial ceremonies and is considered one of the biggest disasters that occurred in the history of the Slovak Air Force.
