Nakajima B5N Kate
The Nakajima B5N Kate was a torpedo bomber that served the Japanese naval air force during World War II. It was designed as a replacement for the obsolete B4N torpedo bomber, which was still in service with the Japanese Navy at the time the Kate was introduced into service. The Kate was designed and produced in the mid-1930s. It was of all-wood construction and was powered by an 820 horsepower Nakajima Hikari 3 engine. The aircraft could carry a torpedo weighing up to 800 kg or up to 800 kg of bombs. It also had a 7.7 mm machine gun for defence against enemy aircraft. The B5N Kate became famous during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when it was used to attack American warships docked in the harbor. Kates were also used in attacks on Australia and the Dutch East Indies. Although the Kate was a successful aircraft in the early years of the war, over time it became obsolete and was replaced by newer types. In total, approximately 1,150 Nakajima B5N Kate aircraft were produced in various versions.
