Object 279 was a heavy tank developed in the Soviet Union in the 1950s. It had an unusual arrangement of eight wheels arranged in pairs on each side of the vehicle, a weight of approximately 60 tons and armour up to 305 mm thick. Its propulsion system included a diesel engine and a hydromechanical transmission. It had a 130 mm cannon and a speed of up to 55 km/h on the road and 30 km/h off-road. It had the ability to navigate on water using two water jets. It was a promising new type of tank, but due to the complex production and high cost, it was never mass produced and remained only as a prototype.
