P-47D Thunderbolt
The P-47D Thunderbolt was an evolutionary successor to the previous P-47C version and brought several improvements. It featured an armored pilot seat and had a larger fuel tank to improve range. The nose of the aircraft was strengthened and the new version had a larger armament payload. The P-47D also included new radio equipment and improved avionics. A wing radio was installed in later versions of the aircraft, allowing the crew to communicate with ground units in real time. The P-47D also participated in the successes during the D-Day invasion in 1944 and was used during the Battle of Normandy. The aircraft was deployed in many other combat operations and was popular with crews for its reliability and high performance. After World War II, the P-47D was replaced by newer types of aircraft in the U.S., but was still in use in several other countries until the late 1950s. Today, some examples of the P-47D are preserved in museums and used in air shows.
