Product detailed description

149 pieces of kit:
The Supermarine Spitfire is arguably the most famous and beautiful aircraft ever to grace the skies. First flown in 1936, R.J. Mitchell's masterpiece became the clear choice of RAF Fighter Command by 1940 and the envy of every other air force in the world. The Spitfire, powered by the equally famous Rolls Royce Merlin V12 engine, could exceed 580 km/h and excelled in handling. Its ability to get inside the turn of enemy aircraft made it perfect for aerial combat. This became a huge advantage during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, when fighting over southern England and the English Channel. The Spitfire Mk1 became the true symbol of the British Royal Air Force as it played an absolutely indispensable role in the defence of Great Britain against the hitherto undefeated Luftwaffe. Along with the Hurricane, it made an indelible mark on history in the Battle of Britain and remains to this day a highly sought after warplane at all air shows.
