Sikorsky HH-3E Jolly Green Giant
The Sikorsky HH-3E Jolly Green Giant is a helicopter developed in the 1960s for the U.S. Air Force (USAF) and designed primarily for rescuing airmen and aircrews in distress. The first flight took place in 1962. The helicopter was equipped with modern navigation and communication instruments and rescue equipment such as chocks, lifting ropes and rescue baskets. The helicopter had a length of approximately 22 metres, a height of 7 metres and a main rotor diameter of 23 metres. The maximum speed was approximately 315 km/h and the range was approximately 1 400 km. The HH-3E was deployed in several war conflicts, such as the Vietnam War, where it was used to rescue airmen and aircrews in difficult combat conditions. The helicopter has also participated in humanitarian missions, such as rescuing people from natural disasters. After leaving USAF service, some HH-3E helicopters were sold to the civilian sector, where they were used for such missions as firefighting and rescue.
