SR-71 Blackbird
The SR-71 Blackbird was a military strategic reconnaissance aircraft that was produced by Lockheed Martin for the U.S. Air Force during the Cold War. The aircraft was designed to fly very fast and at a high level, being able to conduct reconnaissance in both day and night flight. The SR-71 was powered by two Pratt & Whitney J58 afterburner jet engines, which enabled it to reach speeds of up to Mach 3.5 (approximately 4,000 km/h) and could climb up to 25 km (25 mi) above the ground. It was also capable of flying in a variety of conditions, including extremely high and low temperatures. The SR-71 was equipped with a number of special sensors and cameras for reconnaissance, which allowed it to gather a great deal of information about ground targets, especially military targets. The aircraft also had systems to calculate flight paths and control navigation to avoid the danger of ground fire. In total, only 32 SR-71s were produced and served from 1966 to 1998. During their service, the aircraft achieved several notable reconnaissance successes, including reconnaissance of Soviet and Chinese military installations. The SR-71 is still considered one of the most powerful military aircraft in history and is displayed in several aviation museums around the world.
