Supermarine Spitfire
The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter aircraft that served primarily during World War II. It first flew in March 1936 and became a symbol of British determination in the fight against Nazi Germany during the war. The Spitfire was designed by R. J. Mitchell of the Supermarine Aviation Works. The aircraft had a sleek and aerodynamic design and was equipped with a powerful Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that allowed it to achieve high speeds and agility. The Spitfire was equipped with two guns and four machine guns, allowing it to effectively engage enemy aircraft. During the war, the Spitfire was deployed in many combat operations, including the Battle of Britain, where it played a key role in defending against German attacks. The Spitfire was also deployed in Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. In total, more than 20,000 Spitfires were produced in various versions, serving not only in the British Air Force but also in the air forces of Allied countries. Today, the Spitfire is still a favourite aircraft amongst aviation enthusiasts and several examples are still in flying condition, flying at air shows around the world.

The 312th Czechoslovak Fighter Squadron was founded in 1940 as part of the RAF, when many Czechoslovak airmen who had fled their homeland after the Nazi occupation enlisted. Wing Commander Alois Vasátko DFC was one of the leading Czechoslovak pilots in the RAF. He was born on 29 October 1915 in Brno. He joined the RAF in 1940 and was assigned to 312 Squadron. During his time in the RAF, Vasátko achieved a total of 9 kills and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) for bravery and heroism in combat. After the war, Vasátko returned to Czechoslovakia but was arrested in 1949 and sentenced to 22 years in prison for allegedly spying for the West. He was released in 1960 and subsequently emigrated to Canada, where he died in 1992. His heroism and story have become part of both Czechoslovak and British wartime heritage.
