TBD-1 Devastator
The TBD-1 Devastator was a torpedo bomber used by the US Navy during World War II. Production of this aircraft began in 1935 and the first flight took place in 1937. The Devastator was equipped with a Wright R-1820-22 piston engine and was capable of carrying one torpedo or up to 1,000 kg of bombs. The aircraft was also armed with two 7.62 mm machine guns. The crew consisted of three members - a pilot, a gunner and a torpedo operator. The Devastator was deployed during World War II and was primarily used as a torpedo bomber. It was used in the Battle of Midway, where it was, however, severely outdated and was easily destroyed by Japanese fighters. During the war, the Devastator was gradually replaced by more modern aircraft, such as the Grumman TBF Avenger. A total of 130 Devastators were produced. There are currently no airworthy examples of this aircraft in existence.
