Grumman TBF-1 Avenger
The Grumman TBF-1 Avenger was an American torpedo bomber and reconnaissance aircraft used during World War II. It was developed by the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation and entered service in 1942. The Avenger was powered by a Wright R-2600 piston engine and was capable of carrying one torpedo or 2,000 kg of bombs. It also had 1 12.7 mm machine gun and 2 7.62 mm machine guns. It could carry up to three crew members. The Avenger was deployed during World War II in the Pacific, Atlantic and Mediterranean. It was used as a torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, electronic warfare aircraft, and maritime patrol aircraft. The Avenger became famous for its participation in the Battle of Midway, where it played a key role in the sinking of Japanese carriers. It was also used in the Normandy and Pacific landings and was used as a transport aircraft for evacuating wounded and prisoners. In total, approximately 9,800 Grumman TBF-1 Avengers were produced. After World War II, the Avenger was used in a variety of roles, including reconnaissance, training, and as a firefighting aircraft.
