Tupolev TU144
TU-144 is a Soviet supersonic transport aircraft that was in service from 1968 to 1999. It was the first civilian supersonic aircraft to enter regular service. The TU-144 was developed and built in the Soviet Union as a response to the American Boeing 2707 supersonic aircraft, but was ultimately never put into service. The TU-144 was capable of speeds up to Mach 2.35 (about 2,900 km/h) and could carry up to 140 passengers. However, the aircraft was prone to technical problems and also had several crashes, leading to its low reliability and high maintenance costs. Due to these problems, the TU-144 was reduced in service after a few years, and was eventually replaced by more modern aircraft. Although the TU-144 is no longer in service, it is still considered a significant step in aviation history, pushing the boundaries of technical progress and competition between the Soviet Union and the United States.
